Education for the Villagers of the Sinharaja Rainforest
Help us empower the villagers with knowledge
There are schools based around the Sinharaja Rainforest Reserve. All of them desperately need literature for studying English as a foreign language. There is also a second need - a desperate craving for knowledge about the local rainforest.
We recognise that English books are vital to promote English reading among poor children. Our project not only helps children in Sri Lanka but also their teachers to recognise the importance of English language in everyday life.
Among those rural communities there is a silent sense of despair about the lack of the local schools’ resources to provide for their children. However there is hope that help may be granted from the government and/or from overseas. The people inhabiting the rustic areas around the Sinharaja Rainforest are unable to compete on a global scale and future generations face obstacles towards independence.
What could be done to stimulate change?
First and foremost we can provide the literature for studying. Local schools have English as their first foreign language in a compulsory program. Therefore, we strive to provide the schools with appropriate books.
Our goal is to collect as many books as would be necessary to establish a library in the region around the Sinharaja Rainforest. Ideally our ambition is to collect enough books in order to build more than one library in the region. To accomplish our mission we would also aim to see these libraries equipped with personal computers for the use of pupils.
As our project is very much in its infancy we call for help from similarly concerned as well as ordinary citizens from around England and other parts of the United Kingdom. We would highly appreciate your input towards collecting English literature or providing the project with computers.
The second aspect of our project is to educate pupils about the significance of rainforests - their diversity and the variety of species which inhabit them. Pupils need high levels of relevant knowledge to instil the importance of wildlife in sustaining ecological equilibrium in nature.
We want to empower the local people living around the Sinharaja Rainforest to beneficially use the full richness provided by wildlife around them. All they lack is the knowledge about how to utilise the richness without badly affecting or even ruining eco-balance.
If you feel positively about our mission, please contact us on www.sinharaja.net for further inquiries. All God’s blessings!
